Apartments are “home sweet home” for countless Illinoisans, from those who are beginning their careers and seeking independence to those who are retiring and seeking to downsize.  In addition to its homeownership programs, Rural Development is a financial partner in nearly 550 multi-family housing locations throughout Illinois. Last month, USDA honored two individuals for their service in making their respective rental properties “home” for the residents.

East Elm Apartments, Inc. of Canton, IL, is a not-for-profit faith-based organization formed in 1980 by area churches to provide affordable elderly housing to the public.  Described as “invaluable” to both the Board of Directors and tenants of the apartments, Brian Telander was instrumental throughout the planning and construction of the apartments and has provided dedication and service for more than 35 years.  He has served as the Business Manager / Site Manager for the past several years, receiving numerous compliments from tenants as he ensures the facility and surroundings are maintained in excellent condition.

Shawnee Enterprises, Inc. has 15 family properties in various communities* throughout Southern Illinois.  Hired in 1983, Sam Bradshaw has been with Shawnee Enterprises through floods, fires, and tornados, earning the reputation that “if it breaks, he can fix it.” As Maintenance Technician Supervisor, he is described as providing leadership to both tenants and the maintenance crew and ensuring prompt maintenance and upkeep. His efforts include improving the appearance of the apartments and adding energy saving measures.

“Through the Multi-Family Housing Program, USDA Rural Development helps communities, organizations and  individuals in rural communities build a better future, “ said Colleen Callahan, Illinois Rural Development Director. “We’re honored to work with caring people such as Brian and Sam to provide that opportunity, and thank them for their commitment to excellence.”

* Shawnee Enterprises, Inc. has properties in Anna, Benton, Centralia, Carmi, DuQuoin, Energy, Harrisburg, Herrin, Metropolis, Marion, Salem, & West Frankfort.
