Open House Celebrates Newly Renovated Apartments

USDA Rural Development Area Director Faye McEwen joined owners Russell and Dana Holloway in celebrating the newly renovated Hohenwald Village Apartments at an Open House today.

A $1,325,316 USDA Rural Development Multi-Family Housing Direct Loan combined with Tennessee Housing Development Agency (THDA) funding to allow extensive rehabilitation of the property.  The complex provides 16 one-bedroom units and 32 two-bedroom units.

"It is often a challenge to find safe, affordable rental housing in our rural communities,” McEwen said.  “THDA and the Holloways have been great partners, marshaling resources to make the needed improvements and literally transform this complex.”

Practically stripped down to the studs and rebuilt, the units were given a clean modern look with wood grain vinyl plank floors throughout, new interior and exterior doors and windows, new  appliances including the addition of dishwashers, new HVAC units and water heaters, and new cabinets and countertops.  The units designated as handicap accessible now have the required features to make them fully accessible, and handicap parking, accessible sidewalks, and stairways have been added along with new playground equipment for the resident children.

Lewis County is one of 53 counties in Tennessee designated for support under USDA’s StrikeForce for Rural Growth and Opportunity initiative, which aims to increase investments in rural communities through intensive outreach and strong partnerships with other federal, state and local agencies, community leaders, businesses, foundations, and other groups that are working to combat persistent poverty.

Others participating in the event include Regions Bank Vice President Sarah McKenzie, and USDA Rural Development staff Beverly Peterson and Morgan Buhaly.

USDA Rural Development is moving investments to rural America with housing, business and infrastructure loans, and grants to create jobs and strengthen rural economies with an emphasis to assist areas of persistent poverty.  Since 2009, the agency has assisted more than $1.5 million Tennessee families and businesses in 230 communities in all 95 counties of Tennessee, investing more than $5.4 billion through affordable loans, loan guarantees, and grants.
