USDA Announces Funding for High Energy Cost Grants

U.S. Department of Agriculture-Rural Development Alaska State Director Jim Nordlund today announced the availability of up to $10 million in competitive grants nationwide  to assist communities with extremely high energy costs.

Grants in the High Energy Cost program are available to communities with annual residential energy costs exceeding 275 percent of the national average. The grants may be used to acquire, construct, extend, upgrade or otherwise improve energy generation, transmission or distribution facilities serving eligible communities. They may also be used to install on- and off-grid renewable energy systems and to make energy efficiency improvements.

The application deadline is December 14, 2015.

Since 2009, USDA-Rural Development has invested nearly $2 billion in 225 rural Alaskan communities.  These investments in housing, community facilities, business, energy, water and sewer, telecom and electric have helped to grow rural Alaska’s economy and enhance the quality of life for its residents.
