Investment to Improve Infrastructure for more than 2,500 Rural Missourians

MONROE CITY, MO, Sept. 9, 2021 – U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development Missouri Acting State Director D Clark Thomas announced the agency is investing $1,560,000 to complete improvements to the city of Monroe City’s aging wastewater treatment system. This additional award brings USDA’s total investment to $10,859,000 for this project.

“Missouri’s small towns depend on modern utilities to attract businesses and retain residents, but much of the state’s rural infrastructure is beginning to age,” said Thomas. “Modernizing infrastructure, like wastewater treatment systems, can be costly but is vital to the public health, economic development, and prosperity of rural Missouri. USDA Rural Development partners with rural communities, like Monroe City, by providing affordable financing options to meet their needs.”

USDA Rural Development is providing the city of Monroe City a $1,560,000 loan through its Water and Waste Disposal Loan and Grant program. The city’s outdated wastewater treatment facility and equipment are no longer capable of meeting regulatory wastewater treatment limits. Upgrades to the facility and equipment will allow for the implementation of a new treatment process designed to effectively treat wastewater. When complete, the improvements will provide a safer and more efficient system for all residents and businesses in Monroe City.

Under the Biden-Harris Administration, Rural Development provides loans and grants to help expand economic opportunities, create jobs and improve the quality of life for millions of Americans in rural areas. This assistance supports infrastructure improvements; business development; housing; community facilities such as schools, public safety and health care; and high-speed internet access in rural, Tribal and high-poverty areas.
