$347 thousand grant to assist elementary school education
WILSON COUNTY, N.C., May 26, 2021 –Various federal and state officials joined U.S. Department of Agriculture North Carolina Rural Development in an announcing a Distance Learning and Telemedicine Grant to benefit elementary school students in rural North Carolina.
USDA is investing $347 thousand to implement distance learning labs through video conferencing in six rural elementary schools, providing enhanced access to STEM education for students in Wilson County.
The project includes a telemedicine component, funding the establishment of one hub site at a secondary school and telemedicine equipment in the school health clinics of five rural secondary schools. The addition of this telemedicine equipment will allow students and staff to be evaluated, assessed, and treated each day within the school buildings.
“Our children have a right to a top tier education,” said USDA Rural Development Acting State Director Mel Ellis. “With this investment our rural students will have access to STEM and other educational opportunities to help set them up for success.” USDA Rural Development provides loans and grants to help expand economic opportunities and create jobs in rural areas. This assistance supports infrastructure improvements; business development; housing; community facilities such as schools, public safety and health care; and high-speed internet access in rural areas.
