Release Date

WASHINGTON, D.C., July 1, 2020 The Trump Administration today announced the appointment of John G. Campbell as the new State Director for USDA Rural Development in Mississippi. He starts his position on July 6, 2020.

John Campbell brings a wealth of experience to his new position, and I welcome him to the Rural Development team,” said USDA Deputy Under Secretary for Rural Development Bette Brand. “He will work tirelessly to strengthen the economies of Mississippi’s rural communities.”

Campbell is a native of Greenville, Miss. He graduated from Mississippi State University in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science degree and earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Delta State University in 2004. In 2006, he joined the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce (MDAC). During his 12 years at MDAC, Campbell held several positions, including State Entomologist, Director of the Bureau of Plant Industry, and Deputy Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce.

In 2018, he moved to Washington, D.C., to join the staff of United States Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith, where he provided leadership on a wide range of policy areas, including economic development, energy, telecommunications and agriculture. Campbell leverages nearly 15 years of experience in agricultural and rural issues, along with countless industry and constituent relationships to increase economic prosperity and improve the quality of life in Mississippi.

As state director, Campbell will use his leadership experience to oversee Rural Development programs in a customer-focused manner to continue to restore prosperity in rural Mississippi.

Under the direction of Secretary Sonny Perdue, USDA will always be facts-based and data-driven, with a decision-making mindset that is customer-focused. Secretary Perdue leads USDA with four guiding principles: to maximize the ability of American agriculture to create jobs, sell foods and fiber, and feed and clothe the world; to prioritize customer service for the taxpayers; to ensure that our food supply is safe and secure; and to maintain good stewardship of the natural resources that provide us with our miraculous bounty. And understanding that we live in a global economy where trade is of top importance, Secretary Perdue has pledged to be an unapologetic advocate for American agriculture.

USDA Rural Development provides loans and grants to help expand economic opportunities and create jobs in rural areas. This assistance supports infrastructure improvements; business development; housing; community services such as schools, public safety and health care; and high-speed internet access in rural areas.
