Bill Davis, USDA Rural Development acting state director, today announced that Central Power Electric Cooperative will receive a $50.4 million loan to increase capacity to meet the demand for electric services in North Dakota.

“Investing in infrastructure is critical to keeping our communities of all sizes thriving,” said Davis. “This project will expand and upgrade services while delivering dependable and affordable electricity.”

Central Power Electric supplies power to its six member cooperatives serving over 65,000 farms, homes and businesses located in a service area of 25 counties across central and southeast North Dakota. The USDA loan will support the build-out of 32 miles of new transmission line, replace 57 miles of transmission line, construct nine new distribution substations, and make improvements to 20 existing substations.

Financing is being provided through USDA’s Electric Program, which is the successor to the Rural Electrification Administration. The program makes loans and loan guarantees to nonprofit and cooperative associations, public bodies and other utilities to help finance the construction of electric distribution and generation facilities in rural areas.
