USDA Rural Development Area Specialist Mark Simmons today announced a Water & Waste Disposal Loan of $957,000. The funds will be used to upgrade the existing water facility and improve system reliability.

“Having a dependable and adequate water source is very important to the livelihood of any community,” said Simmons. “The City of Lexington’s water source has caused issues involving water pressure and loss. With these new improvements, Lexington will have a reliable source of dependable water. We are proud to be a partner to ensure this city has a viable water source.”

Lexington recently purchased their current water system from a private source. Over 75% of the water system is over 50 years old. Presently, the city has an issue with flow and pressure. Water loss of greater than 20% has been experienced mainly due to 10,000 feet of older spiral and lead jointed pipes that are in need of replacement.

The existing facility will be upgraded to improve system reliability and to loop dead end mains. An older pipe will be replaced at the end of its economic life.

The Water & Waste Disposal Loan and Grant Program provides funding for clean and reliable drinking water systems, sanitary sewage disposal, sanitary solid waste disposal, and storm water drainage to households and businesses in eligible rural areas.
