Today U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development Georgia and the City of Warrenton celebrated the groundbreaking for construction of Warrenton’s new wastewater treatment facility that is funded with USDA’s Water and Wastewater Disposal Loan and Grant program.

“We are pleased to assist in the financing of this project. We applaud the City in their efforts to complete needed infrastructure improvements. These improvements will aid the city in providing quality services to the residents and to the community, ” said Donnie Thomas, Rural Development Georgia Acting State Director. The project scope addresses Georgia Environmental Protection Division violations and provides for future growth demands on the system.

The $3,784,000 loan and $3,592,525 grant will be used construct a new .50 mgd wastewater treatment plant, decommission the City’s North Pond wastewater treatment facility, and add chlorination at the South Pond wastewater treatment facility.  Once the new treatment plant is complete, the South Pond will be used as an equalization and treatment basin to handle high flows.

Increasing the City’s wastewater treatment capacity from 0.34 mgd to 0.50 mgd will allow the City to treat sewage from Warren County and the City of Camak as well as provide the City of Warrenton with some capacity to add new users in the future.

Additional work under contract funded by this USDA loan and grant award includes televising and rehabilitating the existing gravity sewer pipeline system to reduce infiltration and inflow.  Four of the six pump stations will be replaced or refurbished to eliminate sewer spills and the remaining two pump stations will be replaced with gravity sewers.

The USDA Water and Wastewater Disposal Loan and Grant program helps very small, financially distressed rural communities extend and improve water and waste treatment facilities that serve local households and businesses. Good practices can save tax dollars, improve the natural environment, and help manufacturers and businesses to locate or expand operations. Rural communities seeking funding for water and wastewater infrastructure are invited to contact the Rural Development Georgia Community Programs Division for further information at (706) 546-2171.
