Rural Development State Director Tom Fern joined Congressman Andy Barr and other local officials in Fleming County today to break ground on a water system improvement project.
“America’s infrastructure must be modernized if we are to continue to create jobs, expand opportunity and improve quality of life,” Fern said. “USDA understands how important projects like this are to the economic development of small, rural Kentucky communities.”
Through its Water and Environmental Program, USDA provided more than $1.2 million in loan and grant funds to replace deteriorating cement pipes and enable the association to continue providing a safe and dependable water supply to nearly 4,000 customers in Fleming County.
Fleming County is part of the USDA StrikeForce Initiative for Rural Growth and Opportunity and is one of many being highlighted by the SOAR initiative (Shaping Our Appalachian Region), which was created to boost Eastern Kentucky’s economic development.
The President’s plan for rural America has brought about historic investment and resulted in stronger rural communities. Under the President’s leadership, these investments in housing, community facilities, businesses and infrastructure have empowered rural America to continue leading the way – strengthening America’s economy, small towns and rural communities.
