USDA Continues its National Homeownership Month Celebration
The Dream of Homeownership can be your reality!
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M., June 17, 2021 – The yearly National Homeownership Month celebration continues as the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) continues its efforts to educate the public that access to affordable housing for rural Americans is more than a dream.
The first celebration was held in 1997 as ‘National Homeownership Week’ when government agencies and private industry entities were given this challenge to increase homeownership opportunities.
Originally the celebration was held during the first week in June but was expanded in 2001 to include the entire month of June (however New Mexico had been doing a month-long celebration since the beginning of the initiative in 1997).
Since then the U.S. Census Bureau reports New Mexico’s homeownership rate is above 67.5% with some counties reaching a homeownership rate of over 80%.
“We are proud of the fact that Rural Development has been able to provide home loans to those choosing to live in rural New Mexico even during the pandemic and a major economic downturn, said Eric Vigil, Acting State Director for New Mexico. He added, “We’ve done so because our programs are consumer friendly offering no money down for a home and other advantages.”
In a recent interview with Stephanie Hope from USDA, Deputy Under Secretary for Rural Development Justin Maxson agreed with Vigil by saying Rural Development’s home loans is helping many rural residents become homeowners. Click here to hear the interview.
