The City of Abbotsford celebrated the completion of construction of the City’s new state-of-the-art Wastewater Treatment Plant with a community celebration and open house event today.

Area residents joined City Leaders; and Federal Officials and Local Representatives for an open house event marking the commencement of operation of the new facility.

The project was made possible with the help of an $8.58 million loan and grant combination through USDA Rural Development’s Water and Environmental Programs. The total cost of the project was $9.424 million.

USDA Rural Development State Director Stan Gruszynski, said infrastructure projects like these directly tie into the sustainability and viability of rural Wisconsin communities.

“Aging water and waste infrastructure systems threaten the ability of rural communities to provide clean, safe drinking water to residents and to protect precious environmental resources. Access to reliable infrastructure shouldn’t be a privilege, but a right of every Wisconsin Resident,” said Gruszynski. “This project exemplifies a continued effort on behalf of USDA Rural Development’s mission to be a partner in helping rural communities, by providing the assistance needed to build a foundation for a thriving community. We are pleased to have been a part of this project and the positive impact it will have.”

The new wastewater treatment plant replaced the City’s 55 year old facility and equipment that were still in use since the plant’s original construction. While operations of the City’s system had historically provided reliable and effective wastewater treatment, the plant facilities were past their design life and very expensive to continue to maintain.  The new plant and upgrades will ensure the City can meet existing, and future, wastewater treatment needs of the community.

Included in the construction project were upgrades to the Linden Street lift station, a new administration and control lab building, a garage for sanitary sewer utility equipment, decommissioning the old plant, and installation of supervisory control and data acquisition equipment at existing lift stations throughout the City to remotely monitor lift station operations.

The Water and Environmental Program provides loans and grants to ensure that necessary investments are made in water and wastewater infrastructure to ensure safe drinking water and protect the environment in rural areas.

During the past year, USDA Rural Development invested nearly $577 million throughout rural Wisconsin and helped a record number of residents receive funding for economic development projects and quality of life improvements. The agency’s investment in Wisconsin helped create or retain more than 1,560 jobs; aided 3,000 families in buying their own homes; and assisted more than 80 communities in improving community facilities and upgrading local infrastructure.
