USDA Rural Development Area Director Kelly Gregory today announced a Rural Business Development Grant (RBDG) of $7,200 to the City of Osceola. The funds were used to conduct a lodging feasibility study, retail market study and economic development/retail market brochure to support the demand for a hotel.

“The city of Osceola and surrounding smaller communities contribute a lot to this region through tourism and travel,” said Gregory. “The city took it upon themselves to conduct a study that would support the need for a new hotel in the area that would aid in job creation and benefit the local economy. Rural Development is proud to partner with Osceola to generate the support and traction needed to possibly make this reality.”

The study conducted by Growth Services Group states that Osceola and surrounding smaller communities provide tourism, industry and pass through travel which generate demand for a hotel. It recommends a quality 33-room brand name hotel to include a business center, banquet space, hot breakfast, bar and lounge area, fitness room and internet. The study further states that “A new hotel would assist the city, local merchants and restaurants with recapturing lost hotel stays and subsequent guest spending by redirecting that economic impact back to the community.”

It is anticipated that a new hotel would generate approximately 8 new jobs.

The RBDG program is a grant designed to support targeted technical assistance, training and other activities leading to the development or expansion of small emerging private businesses in rural areas. Further information on additional programs is available by visiting the USDA Missouri Rural Development website at http://www.rd.usda.gov/mo.
