More Than 2,500 West Virginians Will Benefit from Investment

SCARBRO, W.Va., July 29, 2024 – U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development West Virginia State Director Ryan Thorn today announced that USDA is investing $1.7 million to improve water and wastewater infrastructure for the White Oak Public Service District (PSD) in Fayette County.

“Having clean, reliable, and safe water isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity,” said Thorn. “Basic infrastructure improvement projects such as this serve as the foundation that future community and economic development projects are built. Under the leadership of the Biden-Harris Administration, Rural Development is committed to ensuring that our communities have an opportunity to not only survive, but thrive. This investment is a testament of that commitment and will have a lasting positive impact on community health and the economy for many decades to come.”

White Oak PSD was awarded a $1,058,000 low-interest loan and a $597,000 grant through Rural Development’s Water and Waste Disposal Loan and Grant Program to make upgrades its wastewater treatment plant in Glen Jean. Specifically, the funds will be used to remove the secondary biological treatment bypass and install a lift station. Since 2021, Rural Development has awarded $7,024,000 to White Oak PSD to make improvements to the facility.

Under the Biden-Harris Administration, Rural Development provides loans and grants to help expand economic opportunities, create jobs and improve the quality of life for millions of Americans in rural areas. This assistance supports infrastructure improvements; business development; housing; community facilities such as schools, public safety and health care; and high-speed internet access in rural, tribal and high-poverty areas.
