Investment to Help City Purchase Law Enforcement Vehicle & Equipment

COLUMBIA, MO, Oct. 30, 2020 – The Trump Administration, along with Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development State Director for Missouri Jeff Case, today announced that the USDA is investing $13,500 to modernize Mound City’s law enforcement equipment.

“Adequate, reliable emergency services are vital to rural communities,” said Trump Administration Official State Director Case.  “USDA Rural Development is pleased to partner with small rural communities, like Mound City, to ensure they have the transportation and equipment necessary to keep law enforcement personnel safe and citizens secure.  Under the leadership of President Trump and Agriculture Secretary Perdue, USDA has been working tirelessly to be a strong partner to rural Missouri in building stronger and healthier communities, because we know when rural America thrives, all of America thrives.”

The city of Mound City will use a $13,500 Community Facilities Grant towards modernizing equipment for city’s law enforcement personnel.  A computer-aided dispatch system with server will replace an outdated computer and will allow for accurate, timely reports along with ample storage capabilities not currently available on the city’s existing system. A MOSWIN (Missouri Statewide Interoperability Network, the statewide public safety communication system) digital radio system will replace the department’s outdated analog system and allow for efficient communications with surrounding law enforcement departments and the Missouri State Highway Patrol.  The police station, located in city hall, will receive a security system to ensure adequate safety measures are maintained; there is no current security system in place.  Finally, Mound City’s patrol vehicles have increasingly high mileage, so the city will add a new, reliable patrol vehicle to its fleet.  When complete, the modern equipment and vehicle will better service Mound City’s more than 1,100 residents.

More than 100 types of projects are eligible for Community Facilities funding.  Eligible applicants include municipalities, public bodies, nonprofit organizations, and federally recognized Native American tribes.  Projects must be in eligible rural areas with a population of 20,000 or less.  Grant applications will be accepted on a continual basis until funds are exhausted.

USDA Rural Development provides loans and grants to help expand economic opportunities and create jobs in rural areas. This assistance supports infrastructure improvements; business development; housing; community facilities such as schools, public safety and health care; and high-speed internet access in rural areas.
