Trump Administration Invests $353,000 to Improve Public Safety in Rural Michigan

The Trump Administration today announced that the United States Department of Agriculture has provided a $353,000 in grants to improve public safety across rural Michigan.

“In addition to providing core infrastructure, USDA also helps communities by giving them to means to protect and maintain vital services,” said USDA State Director for Michigan Jason Allen.  “Today’s announcement underscores the unprecedented extent to which this administration is striving to improve the quality of life in rural Michigan communities.”

Michigan has 11 projects:

  • The City of Harbor Beach, in Huron County, will use a $24,500 grant to purchase and equip a police patrol vehicle.
  • The Harbor Beach Area Fire Department will use a $48,600 grant to purchase an off-road rescue unit as part of their firefighting equipment. The unit will be able to go off-road into fields, woods, and rough terrain and will be equipped for firefighting and rescue.
  • Hampton Charter Township, in Bay County, will use two grants totaling $63,700 to purchase of a pumper fire truck and a fire/rescue medical truck.  These will replace vehicles that are at the end of their service lives. 
  • The Mid Michigan Community Fire Board, in Gratiot County, will use a $32,000 grant to purchase portable radios.  These will replace older radios that do not meet State of Michigan standards. 
  • The Village of Elsie, in Clinton County, will use a $42,000 grant to purchase a police patrol vehicle.
  • The City of Clio, in Genesee County, will use an $18,000 grant to purchase a department of public service pick-up truck, replacing two aged and worn vehicles in their fleet.
  • City of Olivet, in Eaton County, will a $15,000 grant to purchase a police patrol vehicle.
  • Richfield Township, in Roscommon County, will use a $24,000 grant to purchase a police patrol vehicle.
  • The Village of Springport, in Jackson County, will use a $50,000 grant to purchase a dump truck. The dump truck will replace a vehicle purchased in 1985 that has more than 300,000 miles and has reached the end of its useful service life. 
  • The Village of Nashville, in Barry County, will use a $3,200 grant to purchase protective vests for law enforcement.
  • The City of Grant, in Newaygo County, will use a $32,000 grant to purchase a trailer jetter. This equipment will mainly be used to flush debris for the stormwater drainage system but also for washing equipment, buildings, and other structures, and transporting water to areas where water service is not readily available.
