Projects in 28 States Will Improve Rural Water Infrastructure for 267,000 Rural Residents and Businesses

The Trump Administration today announced that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is investing $268 million to modernize rural drinking water and wastewater infrastructure across 28 states. In Maine, Anson-Madison Sanitary District, and Town of Winslow will receive a total of $3,942,000.

“Upgrading the infrastructure that delivers safe drinking water and modern wastewater management facilities will improve public health and drive economic development in our small towns and cities,” Deputy Under Secretary for Rural Development Bette Brand said. “Under the leadership of President Trump and Agriculture Secretary Perdue, USDA continues to be a strong partner with rural communities, because we know that when rural America thrives, all of America thrives.”

USDA Rural Development State Director Timothy P. Hobbs said, “Supporting the vitality and sustainability of rural Maine communities is a key priority of the Trump Administration. This substantial investment in rural infrastructure will fund critical upgrades for two Maine wastewater systems, providing reliable infrastructure for area residents and businesses, and contributing to rural prosperity.”

In Maine, two wastewater systems will receive a total of $3,942,000 for upgrades:

  • Anson-Madison Sanitary District will receive a total of $2,040,000 (Water and Waste Disposal Loan of $1,453,000 and Grant of $587,000). This Rural Development investment will be used to upgrade the wastewater treatment facility by installing a new diffused aeration system in the lagoon with blowers controlled by variable frequency drives. The project will provide improved water treatment, improved operational control, reduced freezing damage potential, improved operator safety, and a lower life cycle cost. In addition, a new disinfection building will be constructed near the outlet of the lagoons to store chemicals, house controls, and protect operators during harsh winter conditions.
  • Town of Winslow will receive $1,902,000 through a Water and Waste Disposal Direct Loan. This Rural Development investment will be used to provide funding assistance to complete necessary sewer and storm drain reconstruction of Benton Avenue, in Winslow. The main drivers for these upgrades are health and sanitation improvements and the need to upgrade aging infrastructure that has reached the end of its useful life. The Benton Avenue sanitary sewers consist of mainly clay pipes that are over 50 years old and the pipes have undergone significant deterioration, putting them at greater risk of potential failure.

Funding for the 76 projects nationwide is through the Water and Waste Disposal Loan and Grant Program. These investments will help to improve rural water infrastructure for 267,000 residents.

The investments that USDA announced today are being made in Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington and West Virginia.
