Investment to Help 6,200 Rural Students Have Greater Access to the Internet
EDGECOMBER COUNTY, N.C., October 22, 2020 – The Trump Administration today announced that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is investing $567 thousand to help residents gain access to health care and educational opportunities in rural North Carolina.
“This grant will help an excellent school system expand its reach into rural North Carolina,” said USDA Rural Development State Director Robert Hosford. “Under the leadership of President Trump and Agriculture Secretary Perdue, USDA has been working tirelessly to be a strong partner to rural North Carolina in building stronger and healthier communities, because we know when rural America thrives, all of America thrives.”
In rural North Carolina, Edgecombe County Schools will use a $567 thousand Distance Learning Telemedicine Grant to purchase and deploy mobile video-conferencing equipment. The distance learning project will facilitate the delivery of Science Technology Engineering and Math focused courses to students at six county schools. This distance learning network will also enable the delivery of professional development courses and opportunities for faculty and staff.
USDA Rural Development provides loans and grants to help expand economic opportunities and create jobs in rural areas. This assistance supports infrastructure improvements; business development; housing; community facilities such as schools, public safety and health care; and high-speed internet access in rural areas.
