Investment to Help 8,207 Have Greater Access to Internet to Higher Education
NORTH CAROLINA CENTRAL UINIV., N.C. October 20, 2020 – The Trump Administration today announced that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is investing $573 thousand to help residents gain access to health care and educational opportunities in rural North Carolina.
“This grant will help NCCU bring their quality education to rural North Carolina,” said USDA Rural Development State Director Robert Hosford. “Under the leadership of President Trump and Agriculture Secretary Perdue, USDA has been working tirelessly to be a strong partner to rural North Carolina in building stronger and healthier communities, because we know when rural America thrives, all of America thrives.”
In rural North Carolina, NCCU will use a $573 thousand to assist the school along with its partnering end-user sites, to expand services to 10 rural sites for law education services, as well as services and clinics for mental health education. NCCU will be partnering with Johnson C. Smith University to provide additional educational services and clinics related to digital literacy and cybersecurity. These courses are specifically tailored to address issues experienced by rural communities.
USDA Rural Development provides loans and grants to help expand economic opportunities and create jobs in rural areas. This assistance supports infrastructure improvements; business development; housing; community facilities such as schools, public safety and health care; and high-speed internet access in rural areas.
