New Schools, Health Clinics and Public Safety Facilities
Will Benefit 3.5 Million People Nationwide
RALEIGH, N.C., Oct. 28, 2020 – The Trump Administration today announced that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is investing $69.7 million to improve critical community facilities to benefit rural residents in North Carolina.
“Rural America needs safe, modern community infrastructure to help residents and businesses achieve greater prosperity and have access to essential services,” USDA Deputy Under Secretary for Rural Development Bette Brand said. “Under the leadership of President Trump and Agriculture Secretary Perdue, USDA continues to be a strong partner to rural communities, because we know that when rural America thrives, all of America thrives.”
Background:
USDA is funding 25 projects in North Carolina through the Community Facilities Direct Loan and Grant Program. These investments will be for such purposes as to build or upgrade schools, libraries, clinics and public safety facilities. For example:
- Ahoskie is receiving a $60 thousand loan and $74 thousand grant to purchase three new police vehicles and equipment for their Police Department.
- Arnoldsburg is receiving a $183 thousand loan and $222 thousand grant to purchase a new pumper/tanker truck for the fire department.
- Autryville Area Fire Department, Inc. is receiving a $70 thousand loan and $35 thousand grant to purchase new two-way radios and a generator.
- Bridges Educational Foundation Inc. is receiving a $2 million loan to construct a new day care and after school facility.
- Columbus County is receiving a $35.3 million in loans to construct new elementary schools in Tabor City and Cerro Gordo.
- Como Volunteer Fire Department is receiving a $45 thousand loan and $130 thousand grant to purchase a new rescue truck.
- Edenton is receiving a $70 thousand loan and $85 thousand grant to purchase three new police vehicles as well as a new vehicle for the fire department.
- Fremont is receiving a $285 thousand loan and $349 thousand grant to purchase two new pumper tanker trucks for the fire department.
- GHA Autism Supports is receiving a $334 thousand loan and $64 thousand grant to construct a new long-term care facility. The facility will include 10 suites/living quarters for patients, an office, medical room, kitchen, laundry room, community area, and bathrooms on a 50-acre farm.
- Greenevers Volunteer Fire Department is receiving a $31 thousand loan and $48 thousand grant to purchase and outfit a fire truck.
- Help, Incorporated Center Against Violence is receiving a $2.1 million loan to construct a shelter for abused women and children.
- Herring Volunteer Fire and Rescue Inc. is receiving a $278 thousand loan and $182 thousand grant to purchase a heavy-duty custom pumper truck.
- Hertford County is receiving a $232 thousand loan and $243 thousand grant to purchase two ambulances and a generator.
- High Community Health Inc. is receiving a $1.9 million loan to purchase an existing 11,359 square foot building that will be converted into a medical facility.
- Hobgood is receiving a $14 thousand loan and $43 thousand grant to purchase equipment for the public works department.
- Hope Mills is receiving a $17 million loan to construct a public safety building.
- Housing Assistance Cooperation is receiving a $625 thousand loan to purchase a building for administrative purposes.
- Renu Life Extended Inc. is receiving a $3.7 million loan to construct a facility for severe traumatic brain injury survivors who require 24-hour care and supervision. The proposed project includes constructing a 24-bed, 19,660 square foot medical residential facility in Goldsboro.
- Rowland Rescue Squad Inc. is receiving a $51 thousand loan and $150 grant to purchase a new crash truck.
- Rowland Rural Fire Department Inc. is receiving a $70 thousand loan and $210 grant to purchase a new tanker fire truck.
- Snow Hill Fire Department is receiving a $420 thousand loan and $550 thousand grant to purchase and equip a new ladder truck for the fire department.
- Spencer is receiving a $256 thousand loan to renovate a building to become a government complex.
- Stoneville is receiving $168 thousand in loans and $208 thousand in grants to purchase a new police vehicle, dump truck, backhoe, minihoe, and sewer camera.
- Wade Community Fire Department Inc. is receiving a $515 thousand loan and $90 thousand grant to purchase a new pumper truck.
- Wallace is receiving a $487 thousand loan and $595 thousand grant to purchase a new rescue vehicle and tanker fire truck.
“These projects are helping rural communities across North Carolina,” said USDA Rural Development State Director Robert Hosford. “We expect 2021 to be as productive if not more so.”
Brand announced essential community projects today in Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Guam, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Indiana, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
More than 100 types of projects are eligible for Community Facilities funding. Eligible applicants include municipalities, public bodies, nonprofit organizations and federally recognized Native American tribes. Projects must be in rural areas with a population of 20,000 or less.
