Funding will Improve Rural Water Infrastructure for over 1,800 Rural
South Dakota Residents
EAGLE BUTTE, S.D., Oct. 26, 2020 – U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development South Dakota State Director Julie Gross today announced through a virtual event that USDA is investing over $27 million in the Mni Waste’ Water Company to make improvements to its water infrastructure.
“Quality water services are important to the health and economic vitality of rural communities in South Dakota. This funding will provide dependable and quality to over 1,800 rural South Dakota residents,” said USDA Rural Development South Dakota State Director Julie Gross. “Under the leadership of President Trump and Agriculture Secretary Perdue, USDA is committed to being a strong partner in deploying this critical infrastructure in South Dakota and across all of America’s rural communities, because we know when rural America thrives, all of America thrives.”
The Mni Waste Water Company will utilize a USDA Rural Development Water and Environmental loan of $9,646,000 and a grant of $17,500,000, leveraged with Indian Health Service funds of $3,070,000, and an applicant contribution of $2,517,000 for a total project cost of $32,773,000, to extend water services to the northeastern area of the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation, including the community of Timber Lake. The North 63 water project will expand and improve water pressures along the route, alleviating potential health and sanitary concerns with water pressure issues. Water service will be extended north of the Moreau River. The project will serve 1,839 rural South Dakota residents.
The Water and Waste Disposal Loan and Grant Program provides funding for clean and reliable drinking water systems, sanitary sewage disposal, sanitary solid waste disposal, and storm water drainage to households and businesses in eligible rural areas with populations of 10,000 or less.
USDA Rural Development provides loans and grants to help expand economic opportunities and create jobs in rural areas.
