USDA Rural Development Montana Provided $5,227,000 in Funding to Assist in Replacing Aging Infrastructure

Back in 2008, Big Sandy had a BIG problem! It had an aging city wastewater system constructed in the 1920’s that no longer met the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) codes.

“Rural Development has been there with Big Sandy from the beginning of this project,” said Rural Development State Director Anthony J. Preite. “Not only to help with funding, but also to ensure they were doing the right project, so that the infrastructure would support the continued growth of the community.”

To get Big Sandy’s system up to code and to meet the future infrastructure needs the project was broken down into three phases.

Phase I, completed in early 2010, addressed the initial waste collection issues. Phase II, opened on Earth Day, April 22nd, 2015, made improvements to the wastewater treatment facility. The lagoons were relined to reinforce containment, the aeration system was updated to assist with odor control, and the ultra-violet disinfection system was upgraded. Also added was another lift station to aid the pump systems when the treated waste is used for spray irrigation on crops. Phase III, will replace the remaining 11,800 linear feet of clay tile sewer mains and install new manhole covers. Big Sandy has not yet set a date for the start of this final phase.

This new wastewater treatment system has made it possible for the 711 residents of Big Sandy to maintain health and safety standards and provide safe, reliable waste disposition.
