U.S. Dept. of Agriculture Rural Development State Director for Michigan James J. Turner today joined local officials to celebrate Earth Day and the obligation of funding related to upgrades for the wastewater treatment facility in the City of East Jordan.
“Local water resources are an integral part of the local economy and quality of life in rural Michigan” said Turner. “USDA Rural Development is excited to help the City of East Jordan maintain and improve the protection efforts already in place.”
USDA Rural Development provided a $1.6 million Water and Environmental Programs (WEP) loan and a $3.4 million WEP grant to support the project. Total cost is $5.7 million.
The project includes upgrades to four lift stations and the expansion of the aerated mechanical treatment system. There are 654 residential customers and 206 commercial users on this system. The project will result in compliance of the wastewater collection and treatment systems as required by the NPDES discharge permit and the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ).
USDA Rural Development State Director for Michigan James J. Turner was appointed by President Barack Obama in 2009. USDA, through its Rural Development mission area, has a portfolio of programs designed to improve the economic stability of rural communities, businesses, residents, farmers and ranchers and improve the quality of life in rural America. Under the Obama Administration, USDA Rural Development has invested more than $7.2 billion in Michigan projects.
