U.S. Dept. of Agriculture Rural Development State Director for Michigan James J. Turner today commemorated the grand opening and open house at Hiawatha Apartments in Iron River.
“These newly renovated apartments will provide clean, safe and affordable housing for residents and their families,” said Turner, who was unable to attend the ceremony in person.
Hiawatha Apartments received a $430,000 Section 538 Multi-Family Guaranteed Housing Loan from USDA Rural Development to help fund the rehabilitation of its 32 units. The improvements included providing new roofs, windows, doors, bathrooms, appliances and improved accessibility.
The Michigan State Housing Development Authority also provided support for the projects.
USDA Rural Development State Director for Michigan James J. Turner was appointed by President Barack Obama in 2009. USDA, through its Rural Development mission area, has a portfolio of programs designed to improve the economic stability of rural communities, businesses, residents, farmers and ranchers and improve the quality of life in rural America. Under the Obama Administration, USDA Rural Development has invested more than $6.5 billion in Michigan projects.
