U.S. Dept. of Agriculture Rural Development State Director for Michigan James J. Turner today commemorated open houses for Brookside Commons and Woda Boardman Lake Apartments in Traverse City.
“Taken together, these facilities will provide clean, safe and affordable housing for 184 residents and their families,” Turner said. “Today’s ceremonies highlight USDA Rural Development’s commitment to rural residents in northern Michigan.”
Woda Boardman Lake received a $650,000 Section 538 Multi-Family Housing Loan from USDA Rural Development to rehabilitate its 112 units. The funds were used to add a community room and office, resurface parking lots, provide new roofs, siding, boilers, windows, doors and improve accessibility.
Brookside Commons is a newly-built development with 72 units. USDA Rural Development provided a $2.5 million loan for the facility, a portion of which is set aside to house homeless and special needs residents.
The Michigan State Housing Development Authority also provided support for the projects.
USDA Rural Development State Director for Michigan James J. Turner was appointed by President Barack Obama in 2009. USDA, through its Rural Development mission area, has a portfolio of programs designed to improve the economic stability of rural communities, businesses, residents, farmers and ranchers and improve the quality of life in rural America. Under the Obama Administration, USDA Rural Development has invested more than $6.5 billion in Michigan projects.
