Today homeownership is a reality for two families in Anson County.
“This year, our celebration of National Homeownership Month will focus on some of the many organizations that have worked with us to help more than 1 million rural families and individuals realize their dreams of homeownership,” Randy Gore, State Director said. “Homeownership helps rural areas support job retention and growth and helps neighborhoods build a sense of place and belonging,”
Habitat for Humanity has partnered with USDA Rural Development and NC Housing Finance Agency (NCHFA) to assist the homebuyers to build and purchase their homes. Habitat for Humanity requires that the homebuyers participate in building their own home by providing sweat equity. Financing for the homes is provided through the USDA Single Family Home Section 502 Direct Loan Program and NCHFA Down Payment Assistance Program. Completion of homebuyer education/counseling training is also a requirement for the homebuyers.
USDA Rural Development’s Section 502 Direct Loan Program provides a path to homeownership for low- and very-low-income families living in rural areas. Providing these affordable homeownership opportunities promotes prosperity, which in turn creates thriving communities and improves the quality of life in rural areas.
In addition to mortgage financing, USDA provides grants and loans to help rural homeowners make improvements or repairs, such as removing health and safety hazards or making accessibility modifications for people with disabilities.
Since the Department’s single-family housing programs were created in 1949, USDA has helped more than 3 million rural residents become homeowners.
USDA employees will celebrate National Homeownership Month throughout June with events across the nation that demonstrate the commitment to provide access to affordable housing for low- and moderate-income rural residents.
