USDA Helped Improve Essential Services for ND Rural Residents

Clare Carlson, USDA Rural Development state director, today announced that USDA invested in four projects to provide essential services for rural residents across North Dakota in Fiscal Year 2017.
 
“By partnering with our small towns and cities, communities are improving needed public services,” said Carlson. “These investments help create better places for rural residents to live, work and thrive.”
 
USDA invested $12.1 million in 2017 through the Community Facilities Direct Loan Program for projects such as social service buildings, housing, health care facilities and other community needs.

Below is the list of projects funded in North Dakota.

  • Able, Inc.: $3.2 million loan to help purchase two care facilities in Dickinson to support individuals with intellectual disabilities.
  • Kindred Community and Rural Fire Protection District: $1.1 million loan to expand the Kindred fire hall to store all their fire trucks, rescue vehicles, and equipment. The facility will also include a training tower and cleaning stations.
  • United Tribes Technical College: $6.9 million loan to finance the construction of 36 family housing units on the United Tribes Technical College campus in Bismarck.
  • Walhalla Community Hospital: $950,000 loan to provide financing for additions and renovations to the Pembilier Nursing Center in Walhalla.


In April 2017, President Donald J. Trump established the Interagency Task Force on Agriculture and Rural Prosperity to identify legislative, regulatory and policy changes that could promote agriculture and prosperity in rural communities. In January 2018, Secretary Perdue presented the Task Force’s findings to President Trump, which included 31 recommendations to align the federal government with state, local and tribal governments to take advantage of opportunities that exist in rural America. USDA Rural Development provides loans and grants to help expand economic opportunities and create jobs in rural areas. This assistance supports infrastructure improvements; business development; housing; community services such as schools, public safety and health care; and high-speed internet access in rural areas.
