USDA Invites Tribal Applications for Rural Business Development Grant

Name
Kelly K. Clark
City
Carson City
Release Date
Deadline for Applications May 19

USDA Rural Development Acting State Director Herb Shedd has announced the agency is accepting tribal applications for the Rural Business Development Grant (RBDG). The Rural Business Development Grants can fund technical assistance, establish revolving loan funds and support rural distance learning programs that provide educational or job training. Eligible Tribes are those with a Tribal Business Enterprise governing board that is separate from Tribal Government.

In the past, Nevada Tribes have used the RBDG funds to establish revolving loan funds to support micro loans in communities or to support business enterprise activities.  For example, the Wells Band used this grant to open a business incubator adjacent to the I-80 corridor.

The Fort McDermitt Tribe used a series of RBDG grants to open the Red Mountain Travel Plaza in remote Humboldt County. The first grant paid for a feasibility study for the Travel Plaza and convenience store.  Additional grants provided for equipment and staff training. The Travel Plaza is now open and provides fuel and food for travelers in the area.

Applications for the Native American set-aside are due Friday, May 19th at 4:30 p.m. at the USDA Rural Development Office in Carson City, 1390 S. Curry St., Carson City, NV, 89703.

For more information on the tribal Rural Business Grant, please contact Michelle Kelly at (775) 887-1222, Ext. 118 or Laura Chavez at (775) 887-1222 Ext. 117.
