USDA Provides $2.3 Million to Bring Safe Drinking Water to City of Benkelman

USDA Rural Development announces the funding of more than $2.3 million awarded to the City of Benkelman.  The funds will be used for two new wells and a transmission line to provide safe drinking water to the city.

Mayor Harry Whittington said, “Speaking for all the residents of Benkelman, I want to express our very deepest thanks to the USDA Rural Development for their support of our water project.  Benkelman is facing a project of major proportions.  Without the assistance of USDA Rural Development, I’m not sure how we could complete the project and accomplish our common goal of providing all Benkelman citizens clean, safe drinking water.”

The City of Benkelman needs the water improvements as the municipal water system is out of compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCL) limits for uranium and the existing wells do meet the State of Nebraska’s definition of Ground Water under the Direct Influence of Surface Water (GWUDI).

“It is always pleasing to help communities utilize USDA dollars to benefit the rural residents,” said Community Programs Specialist Natalie Furrow, USDA Rural Development. “Clean drinking water is essential everywhere and with this funding we will help bring it to Benkelman residents.”

The project was funded through the USDA Rural Development Water program. For more information contact Natalie Furrow at 308-534-2360 ext.1129.
