USDA Rural Development Administrator Discusses New Hampshire Housing Partnerships

USDA Administrator for Housing and Community Facilities Programs Tammye Treviño visited New Hampshire yesterday to take a closer look at the results of some of the USDA partnerships in the state. She held discussions with New Hampshire Housing in Bedford, and toured the Strong Foundations Charter School in Pembroke and Tilton Senior Center. Treviño was accompanied by Rural Development Area Director Gregg MacPherson.

“I am excited to be in New Hampshire to see firsthand how our partnerships are strengthening small towns, and making historic investments that are improving the rural economy,” said Treviño “Under President Obama’s leadership USDA is building more vibrant rural communities.”

The New Hampshire Housing leadership team hosted a discussion on housing programs, their successes and challenges with Administrator Treviño. In 2011, USDA Rural Development invested $184.2 million in New Hampshire related to housing. New Hampshire Housing is a great partner with USDA in providing affordable, accessible and safe housing for residents of the state.

At the Strong Foundations’ Charter School in Pembroke, Treviño toured of six classrooms, a media room and elevator that are under construction. She was joined by the New Hampshire Public School Charter Association Board, Strong Foundation Executive Director Beth McClure, Strong Foundation

Board Members and Lorna Thibodeau, Banking Center Manager-Concord Office from the Northway Bank. This project was financed by Northway Bank with a USDA Community Facilities Guaranteed Loan. The Strong School works closely with other public schools in the region, charges no tuition and, among its educational programs, provides a critical service to children with special education needs.

In Tilton, community efforts succeeded in converting the former grange building into the Tilton Senior Center. Treviño was joined by USDA representatives Gregg MacPherson, Karen Demers and Patricia Cosentino Town of Tilton Selectboard. The Senior Center provides a range of services to the residents of the region. Partnering with the Town of Tilton, USDA provided grant money essential to offering the programs available at the Center.

President Obama’s plan for rural America has brought about historic investment and resulted in stronger rural communities. Under the President’s leadership, these investments in housing, community facilities, businesses and infrastructure have empowered rural America to continue leading the way – strengthening America’s economy and strengthening small towns and rural communities. USDA’s investments in rural communities support the rural way of life that stands as the backbone of our American values. President Obama and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack are committed to a smarter use of existing Federal resources to foster sustainable economic prosperity and ensure the government is a strong partner for businesses, entrepreneurs and working families in rural communities.

USDA, through its Rural Development mission area, has an active portfolio of more than $170 billion in loans and loan guarantees. These programs are designed to improve the economic stability of rural communities, businesses, residents, farmers and ranchers and improve the quality of life in rural America.
