Harrison County town receives federal funding
DES MOINES, Iowa, Dec. 5, 2024 – U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development State Director in Iowa Theresa Greenfield today announced that the Agency is investing $1,875,000 in a water project for the city of Little Sioux in Harrison County. A $186,000 loan for the project comes through the Water and Waste Disposal Loan and Grants Disaster program. The $1,689,000 grant portion of the funding comes through the Water and Waste Disposal Loans and Grants program.
“Safe drinking water and sanitary waste disposal systems are vital not only to public health, but also to the economic vitality of rural Iowa,” said Director Greenfield. “By supporting modern infrastructure needs, USDA is helping to create good-paying jobs and opportunities for people to build brighter futures right in their own hometown or rural neighborhood.”
Together, the USDA loan and grant will be used to help the city of Little Sioux improve its water system and water treatment plant. This project will increase pressure for distribution, install a hydropneumatics tank system, install a filter backwash tank and backwash pump skid, and replace aged components. The project will add six flushing hydrants at dead ends and add a hydrant at the standpipe for pumper trucks. This project will bring the city into compliance with water pressure standards and will promote the health and safety of residents and visitors to this rural western Iowa community.
