DES MOINES, Iowa, Sept. 10, 2024 – U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development State Director in Iowa Theresa Greenfield today announced the Agency is investing in Floyd County Medical Center with a $23,500,000 loan to expand its facility.
“Our rural hometowns may need a helping hand when it comes to modernizing medical facilities to provide life-saving care, and USDA is there for them,” said Director Greenfield. “By expanding access to healthcare, these communities—to include Charles City—can attract new residents, keep existing residents, and bring good-paying jobs to the area. USDA plays a significant role in making rural Iowa a great place to live, work, and raise a family.”
Floyd County Memorial Hospital, doing business as Floyd County Medical Center, received a $23,500,000 loan to construct a three-story clinic attached to the hospital in Charles City. This project will build a new entrance, registration, and business office area at the main level, with the internal pharmacy department located on the second level. The basement below the new clinic will house mechanical space and a training room, as well as some unfinished space for future growth of primary care. The third level of the facility will be dedicated to outpatient specialty services. The project will also add 20,000 square feet to the parking lot. Once completed, this project will promote the health and safety of the residents of this rural county and surrounding rural areas.
Background
The investment for the hospital came through the Community Facilities Direct Loan and Grant program. This program provides funding to develop essential community facilities in eligible rural areas. Rural areas that are eligible include cities, villages, towns and townships with no more than 20,000 residents according to the latest U.S. Census data.
