U.S. Dept. of Agriculture Rural Development State Director for Michigan James J. Turner today joined local officials to celebrate the ground breaking for a needed expansion to an autism treatment facility in Belding, MI.

“Autism presents itself through difficulties in communication and the formation of relationships,” said Turner. “These skills are vital to life in rural America. USDA is excited to participate in this project and help Ionia County residents receive the treatment they need close to home.”

USDA Rural Development provided a $1,245,000 Community Facilities loan to the Ionia County Community Mental Health Authority (ICCMHA) to support the project. The total cost of the facility will include a 3,400 square foot addition to the facility and a 1,900 square foot renovation of existing space.

The facility recently expanded their treatment services to include children and adults up to age 21, which is a large increase from the previous age cap of six years old. This project will allow treatment to occur in private, non-stimulating treatment rooms that will aid in focusing the children and their families specifically on the treatment.

USDA Rural Development State Director for Michigan James J. Turner was appointed by President Barack Obama in 2009.  USDA, through its Rural Development mission area, has a portfolio of programs designed to improve the economic stability of rural communities, businesses, residents, farmers and ranchers and improve the quality of life in rural America. Under the Obama Administration, USDA Rural Development has invested more than $7.2 billion in Michigan projects.
