The City of Yerington today kicked off work on a $41 million water and wastewater infrastructure project funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Rural Development.

“This is a momentous time for infrastructure improvements in Yerington,” said Nevada Rural Development State Director Phil Cowee. “USDA Rural Development is glad to be a funding partner with the city.”

“Today, as part of this $41 million dollar project, we are announcing a $753,000 grant to replace wastewater collection lines,” Cowee added. “This work is necessary to protect the long-term health of residents and will provide a strong framework for the community for the future.”

Of the $38.8 million in Water and Environmental Program (WEP) funding, $32.8 million is from low-interest direct loans, and nearly $6 million is from grants. In addition, the City of Yerington contributed $2.2 million toward the project.

The system improvements will benefit the 3,048 residents of the City of Yerington including members of the Yerington Paiute Tribe who live at the Yerington Colony, where 69 residential connections will be replaced.

Federal and local dignitaries including Yerington Paiute Tribal Chairman Ginny Hatch participated in a socially distanced ceremony. Mayor John Garry served as master of ceremony.

"We are forever grateful to our shared partners that are making this water/sewer project come to fruition for the citizens of Yerington and the Yerington Paiute Tribe,” Garry said.

The city has contracted with Farr West Engineering of Reno, Nev., to provide design, construction management and inspection services. Q&D Construction, Inc, a Sparks, Nev., firm, has been awarded the construction contract. The project is expected to begin this fall and complete within 18 months.

Sewer funding totals $20,559,000 which includes a $15,577,000 WEP loan, a $4,033,000 WEP grant and $949,000 from City of Yerington. Water Funding totals $20,506,000 including a $17,253,000 WEP loan, a $1,942,000 WEP grant and $1,311,000 in contributions from the City of Yerington.
