In the heart of rural Washington County, Pennsylvania, 72-year-old Maureen Bird faced a crisis that threatened her safety. Her modest home was built almost 100 years ago in Historic Midway and was crumbling. Her cracked basement wall made every day a gamble—would the wall collapse, or would a storm finally bring the house down? Living on a very low income, Maureen had no means to fund the extensive repairs needed to make her home safe.
That is when she reached out to USDA Rural Development’s Single Family Housing 504 Repair Loans and Grants program. Maureen applied for and received a USDA grant and low-interest loan tailored to her budget. The funding covered the critical repairs to her basement wall. Local contractors, employed through the project, worked diligently to restore her home to safety.
Within months, Maureen’s home has been restored from a hazard to a haven. Beyond the physical repairs, the project stimulated the local economy by hiring area workers, showcasing how USDA Rural Development investments ripple outward to strengthen communities.
Maureen stated, “Thank you so much for this program. It helped me immensely to save my home and give me a place to stay safe again.”
