A family of three in Montague, New Jersey, had been facing growing challenges as a worsening roof leak threatened the safety and comfort of their home. Each rainfall brought renewed anxiety, water seeping through the ceiling, new damage appearing in their living space, and the mounting fear that the cost of repairs would be far beyond their reach.

Determined to keep their home safe for their young child, the family turned to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Development to explore options for assistance. After completing their application and working closely with Rural Development staff, they were determined eligible for the Single Family Housing Repair Loans and Grants program, also known as the Section 504 Home Repair program. 

Through the program, the family received a $10,000 grant and a $6,460 loan, which allowed them to fully repair the failing roof before the damage became irreparable. With the repairs complete, the structural integrity of their home was restored and with it, a sense of relief and stability.

Today, the family says the support from USDA Rural Development has made an immeasurable difference. Their home is once again safe, dry, and secure, allowing them to return their focus to daily life rather than worrying every time rain clouds appear. Their experience is a powerful reminder of how essential the Section 504 Home Repair program is in helping rural households maintain safe, livable homes.
