In rural communities, like Gainesville, New York, preparation is not a luxury - it can be a lifeline. With a large rural jurisdiction, volunteer-dependent services, and evolving challenges that range from severe weather to public health emergencies, training and response time matter most. 

Wyoming County’s Fire Training Center needed renovation. It was built in the 1970’s, it was showing signs that it was well beyond its useful life, the facility lacked the needed classroom space, it was not ADA compliant, and maintenance needs were becoming costly.

With all of these considerations in mind, the county’s need was clear: To better serve the community they required a modern, centralized training facility that could meet the needs of today and provide robust training for tomorrow. 

Through the leadership of Wyoming County officials—supported by their emergency management team, congressional partners, and USDA Rural Development’s Community Facilities program—the county’s long‑standing needs were finally transformed into reality. With nearly $600,000 invested by USDA Rural Development, the county was able to upgrade and expand its training infrastructure. In January 2026, Wyoming County completed more than $2 million in renovations and officially opened its state‑of‑the‑art Fire Training Center, now a cornerstone of regional resilience and a critical asset for first responders across the region.

“USDA Rural Development’s investment in Wyoming County – and their first responders - demonstrates how targeted support can help rural communities solve local challenges and strengthen entire systems,” USDA Rural Development NY State Director Richard Mayfield said. “These brave professionals answer the call of their community day in and day out, and it’s only right that they know we’re there for them.”

The center also fosters coordination and collaboration – critical for effective emergency response. It serves as a hub where agencies train together, build relationships and prepare these first responders for real-world scenarios that strengthen communication across the region.

The impact is clear: Responders are better trained and communities are better served and protected - today and tomorrow.
