ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. June 22, 2020 – USDA Rural Development State Director Blake Curtis announced today the 2020 Homeownership Month celebration is continuing with a proclamation by New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham declaring June as Homeownership Month (click here to view the governor’s proclamation).
The declaration by Governor Lujan-Grisham coincides with the National Homeownership Month celebration that has been held since June of 1997.
The first celebration was held when government agencies and private industry entities were given the challenge to increase homeownership.
Over the years Homeownership Month was celebrated by USDA Rural Development, the New Mexico Association of REALTORS® and the New Mexico Mortgage Finance Authority was celebrated to bring awareness to the advantages of owning a home.
Recent studies such as the one done by the National Association of Realtors report homeownership is vital to our nation’s economy and wellbeing because;
- Communities are strengthened if there is a high percentage of homeownership.
- That is; people who pay taxes are more involved in their communities
- And, homeownership provides stability for families
Because of the success of educating the public more people today are homeowners. Today, the U.S. Census Bureau reports New Mexico’s homeownership rate is 67.5% with some counties reaching a homeownership rate of 80%.
To celebrate Homeownership Month USDA Rural Development created a video dedicated to the many families in New Mexico who have received a home loan through this agency (to view the video click here).
