Volunteer fire departments are an integral part of the communities they serve, carrying on a proud tradition of neighbor helping neighbor in times of trouble. Each member is committed to maintaining readiness to respond to every call, but those working in rural communities like Cartersville, Va., must often act on incomplete information due to spotty cell coverage.

Under the Rural Electrification Act of 1936, as amended, the Rural Utilities Service (RUS), is considering a request for loan financing from Minnkota to replace aging, 1940’s era wood transmission line structures along approximately 25.5 total miles of existing 69 kilovolt (kV) transmission line. The Project runs from east of Minnkota’s Maple River substation in Cass County, North Dakota to the Buffalo River substation in Clay County, Minnesota. 

During a good year, Alaska’s outdoor growing season is three months for most lettuces and herbs, so providing greens for a community year-round is a feat in itself. Doing so sustainably is another challenge entirely!

In 2018, innovator Henry Krull and his family decided to provide healthy, fresh, locally-grown greens to the Kenai community and foster local interest in sustainability.

The remote town of Dorothy, New Jersey, is made up of about 1,300 residents. It’s small, surrounded by miles of pineland, and traversed only by two-lane roads. It’s the kind of place where having a friendly neighbor could go a long way if you found yourself in a pinch.

Lifetime local and Dorothy Volunteer Fire Company Fire Chief Jesse Hand is happy to be that neighbor. It’s all he’s known in his now 40 years of public service.
