Energy Grant Helps the “Show Go On” in Southeast Montana

Ever since moving pictures began, Main Street U.S.A.’s neon-lighted movie theaters have provided a beloved escape for small town residents.

As Rosebud County’s only theater, the Roxy has been a cultural mainstay ever since it replaced Forsyth’s old silent film theater back in 1930.

Owner Michael Blakesley’s history with the Roxy doesn’t go back quite that far; he started working as a projectionist there in 1975 and bought the theater with his brother-in-law four years later. He became the sole owner in 1992 after his brother-in-law moved to Havre.

“I began working there just out of high school for $5 a night when we were running a projector and carrying around 80-pound film cannisters,” said Michael. “When we bought it, our original plan was to fix it up and sell it, but I wound up liking the business, so I decided to stay.”

As technology evolved over the years, the Roxy’s projection system rolled with the times. But – when a more energy-efficient upgrade was due – Michael connected with the Montana USDA Rural Development energy team and applied for a Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) grant so he could purchase and install a new digital projection system.

“We heard about the grant from a representative of the National Association of Theater Owners and thought it would be a good way to upgrade our system and save energy,” said Michael. “The new machine has definitely reduced our energy bills because it runs on about 35 percent less energy than the old one.”

Since the system was installed last summer, several feature-length movies have been projected on the Roxy’s big screen, treating moviegoers from across southeastern Montana to a much-improved theater experience.  Open seven days a week, the Roxy features nightly shows, plus a popular Sunday matinee.

“People now have so many more options for entertainment,” said Michael. “This has allowed us to upgrade the experience for our customers. The new machine uses laser technology, and the picture is brighter and crisper.”

The future for the Roxy appears as bright as its neon sign that lights up Main Street every night. And while Michael shows no sign of slowing down, perhaps one day, a high school student among his current staff might step up to ensure the “show goes on” at the Roxy.
