New Design Opens the Door to Improved Patient Care at Midwest Medical Center

A well-preserved 19th-century small town in northwest Illinois has a hidden gem. The Midwest Medical Center in Galena provides care close to home to its neighbors. The Center is classified as a ‘necessary provider due to its critical access status in a rural area. Visitors to the medical center are greeted by nurses and doctors who do more than care for you - they provide essential and expert services while also being compassionate and caring. It’s no surprise that Midwest Medical Center seeks opportunities to improve and expand its services.

In 2023, USDA Rural Development provided a Community Facilities Direct Loan in the amount of $20,750,000 and a Guaranteed Loan of $5,000,000 to help the medical center construct a new addition.

Midwest Medical Center upgrades

"Rural hospitals are essential and critical elements to the overall health of rural communities. To overcome rural hospitals' financial challenges, workforce shortages, and regulatory burdens, they need every tool at their disposable in order to thrive and continue their great services," State Director Jesus Ortega said. "Illinois Rural Development is incredibly proud to be part of their success as Midwest Medical Center expands its facility to provide additional services and enhance the well-being of the community.”

The Center’s new addition and remodel will include a rehabilitation department and a wellness center featuring a walking and running track, exercise studios, restrooms, and private treatment rooms for rehabilitation patients and wellness members. The Midwest Medical Center is a place where people feel they get the proper care where they need most.

“It’s never just about the bricks and mortar. The heart of our facility is our dedicated team,” said Tracy Bauer, President and CEO. “Planning for this expansion began in 2019 with a comprehensive review of operations, incorporating feedback from the community and staff to shape the future of care at Midwest Medical Center. We’re thrilled to open our expanded facility and offer even more services to our community,” added Bauer. “This project is a testament to the dedication of our team, who have worked tirelessly to bring this vision to life.”

Thanks to the successful collaboration between Midwest Medical Center and the funding efforts supported by the USDA Rural Development Community Facilities program, the Midwest Medical Center's growth and expansion will continue to provide a wide range of services for families in Galena and the surrounding areas of Illinois.

“It’s been a tremendous opportunity for growth and learning. It brings me great joy in knowing that what I do impacts the rural community where I came from, where I live, and raise my family now,” said Andrea Imel, Area Specialist with Rural Development.

“Whenever patients visit the hospital, they can be assured they are greeted with smiles, words of thanks, and warm handshakes,” Andrea pointed out. Despite the challenges faced by most rural hospitals, the Midwest Medical Center is not only overcoming these challenges; it is also growing and thriving.
