The city of Ottawa warmly welcomed its new YMCA facility in May 2024; a testament to community investment and local collaboration aimed at promoting health, wellness, and social engagement. This state-of-the-art facility represents a $27.5 million investment in the community, made possible by a substantial $12.8 million USDA Rural Development Community Facilities Direct Loan and a re-directed loan through the USDA Rural Economic Development Loan and Grant (REDLG) Program. The $1 million REDLG loan was made to Corn Belt Energy who then relent the funds to Ottawa YMCA.
“USDA Rural Development is dedicated to helping rural towns and communities with critical infrastructure that bolster community health and wellness”, says IL State Director Pam Monetti. “I’m so pleased the Ottawa YMCA took advantage of our Community Facilities program to help build this beautiful 56,000 sq. foot facility that offers a host of health and wellness programs for their town and surrounding communities.”
The new YMCA, designed to meet the diverse needs of the Ottawa community, features a multi-use gymnasium complete with an elevated running track, a modern health and wellness center, and a natatorium that includes both a competition pool and a warm water therapy pool. Families can enjoy the children’s adventure center, secure child watch areas, and family locker rooms, making it easier for parents to prioritize fitness and well-being.
In addition to physical fitness amenities, the facility also boasts a community kitchen and versatile community spaces that encourage socialization, gatherings, and shared experiences among residents. This aligns with the Y’s mission to promote healthy living and foster a sense of community for individuals of all ages.
Julie Hatfield, USDA IL Community Programs Director, expressed her enthusiasm: "It's such a great thing for the city of Ottawa, and USDA RD is so excited to be part of it." The opening of the new YMCA is set to enhance the quality of life for residents, providing a secure environment where families can participate in activities together, promote health and wellness, and build lasting friendships.
The benefits of the YMCA extend far beyond fitness. YMCAs help combat obesity and chronic diseases while encouraging active lifestyles. They are vital community hubs that offer youth development programs, promote social responsibility, and strive to ensure that everyone, regardless of their background, has access to essential programs and services.
With this new YMCA, Ottawa is poised to enjoy a wealth of resources designed to improve physical health, mental wellness, and communal solidarity. As a space where people of all ages can engage, learn, and grow together, the new YMCA is a remarkable investment in the future of Ottawa.
“USDA Rural Development plays a crucial role in enhancing the quality of life and economic viability of rural communities”, says Monetti. “We offer loans and grants to rural communities/townships to repair, build, or expand critical infrastructure, such as Ottawa’s YMCA. We encourage rural towns to reach out to USDA Rural Development to see what resources we might be able to offer.”
