How RBDG Transformed ECC's HVAC Program
By Sierra Rusco
Brian Watson, HVAC Program Coordinator at East Central College in Union, Missouri, is passionate about teaching. With his career in the HVAC industry, Brian finds it essential to give his students the best education possible to prepare them for their careers. When he saw something missing in his curriculum, he made the ECC administration aware of the need. “We had a disconnect,” Brian Watson commented, “and it wasn’t with employment, but with the understanding of new technologies out there today for employment.” One advancement in HVAC technology is the ability to remotely diagnose HVAC units, a skill that HVAC contractors highly value in their employees.
We’re going to grow and be able to grow even further
However, this technology can be expensive, and for a community college with 51 academic pathways, it can be difficult to find funds for equipment. Undeterred, the college was determined to find a way to equip its students with the necessary tools for academic excellence.
The RBDG was a game-changer for ECC, providing funds to purchase four split-system, high-efficiency HVAC units. These units can remotely connect to diagnostic apps on phones and tablets, allowing students to simulate field-like experiences in the classroom. This hands-on approach to learning prepares them for real-world employment scenarios. By using these tools, students learn how to assess and address HVAC issues effectively, significantly enhancing their overall knowledge and employability.
“By having the opportunities and the technologies through (the USDA RBDG program),” Brian said, “we’re going to grow and be able to grow even further.”
As technology advances and the HVAC industry demands more employees, one thing is sure — East Central College will continue to be a top program for HVAC training and can ensure student readiness for the workforce. With RD funding and new equipment for the HVAC program, current industry employees and beginning students with no prior experience can come back to ECC for additional training as new technologies develop.
