Carter County ensures winter readiness
By Sierra Rusco
Carter County, Missouri, nestled in the southeast region of the beautiful Missouri Ozarks, boasts a population of approximately 5,202 residents. The county’s picturesque landscape features winding, steep roads that can pose challenges during the winter months.
Dedicated to ensuring the safety of their community, Carter County embarked on a mission to acquire new road equipment. Their wish list included essential items such as trucks, snowplows, salt spreaders, and a hydraulic hammer. To achieve this, they turned to the Community Facilities Direct Loan and Grant Program from Rural Development.

We got them right on time for when we needed them
Thanks to successful funding efforts with the Community Facilities program, Carter County welcomed their fleet of trucks just before the start of the 2023 winter season. Carter County Clerk Debi Reynolds expressed relief, saying, “We got them right on time for when we needed them, but luckily, we only had one or two days of bad weather.” While last winter was relatively mild for Carter County, Presiding Commissioner Ron Kenney knows you must be ready for the unpredictable in Missouri. “The trucks weren’t needed too much last year,” Ron noted, “but you never know what next winter will look like.”
With a successful winter season behind them, Carter County’s commissioners and road crew stand well-prepared for whatever challenges the upcoming winter may bring. Their commitment to safety remains unwavering, ensuring the well-being of their residents even amidst the twists and turns of curvy Ozark roads.
