Of the 4.6 million veterans living in rural areas, one is Rural Development of Louisiana's Area Office Director and Army veteran Larry D. Geraldson. Larry served his country for over 21 years in both active and reserve military service, including three combat tours of duty in the Gulf, Afghan, and Iraq wars.
Born and raised in south Mississippi, across the border from Bogalusa, LA, Larry was enrolled in school and ROTC at the University of Southern Mississippi when he applied and was approved to construct a new house with a USDA Rural Development home loan. After learning about the loans from family friends, Larry and his wife, Cherita set out to build a 1,200sq ft. house on an acre of land to start their family. The very affordable Rural Development loan terms allowed Larry to focus on school, jump-start his military career, and change the trajectory of his life forever.
"It was a challenge to return to school because I couldn't afford it. But with the GI Bill and money from ROTC, I had just enough to cover it, but nothing else." said Larry. "The Rural Development loan cost $100 a month, allowing me to build a house for my family and put food on the table."
After graduation, Larry went into full-time active duty as a Second Lieutenant, and gladly repaid his Rural Development subsidy and mortgage. Major Geraldson has been recognized for his service, bravery, and significant contributions during combat, and other military operations. He completed a successful military career as a decorated soldier who earned twenty-one awards and campaign ribbons for going above and beyond, with integrity, while living the values learned through the experiences and professional development of a U.S. Army solider.
After his military career, Larry became a federal civilian employee of the Department of Defense, then entered the private sector as a C.E.O. of an International Trading Company. Continuing to grow and advance, Larry became the State Director of a Non-Profit Organization, before coming full circle and accepting the role of Area Director with Rural Development. In his current role, Larry dedicates his time to advancing opportunities for rural communities, much like the one he grew up in.
"I am amazed at how life's journey has brought me full circle to serve in the organization that once served me. Working at Rural Development offers me the opportunity to pour my gratitude into the lives of others while beholding my reflection in the face of each customer." said Larry.
USDA Rural Development proudly serves military veterans and their families with programs, loans, and grants to meet their needs.
