Oglethorpe Power’s recent acquisition of Walton County Power marks a significant step in its mission to provide reliable, affordable, and diversified energy to its member cooperatives who serve predominantly rural service territories across Georgia. The purchase of the 465-megawatt, natural gas-fired facility in Monroe, Georgia, using a $80 million Rural Utilities Service (RUS) Electric Infrastructure Loan, will help the cooperative meet its members’ growing energy demands.

K9 Unit Supports Northeast Iowa Community with Help from USDA Grant

Postville, Iowa, population 2,500, is a hard-working community in the northeast corner of the state supported by an international workforce. A sign at the edge of town reads “Hometown to the World.” People come here to work in local industries, including meatpacking and manufacturing.

As the community has grown over the years, local leaders sought to better support city functions by modernizing law enforcement operations to increase public safety. The town bought in-vehicle cameras and body-camera equipment for the police force.

USDA Rural Development and Habitat for Humanity Partner to Promote Homeownership for Northeast Iowa Family

Chasity, the mother of two children in Independence, Iowa, knew her family needed a better place to live. She reached out to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development (RD) to talk about a mortgage.

Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity owned an old house in town that needed re-habilitated. RD partnered with the non-profit organization to help Chasity become a homeowner. As the future home buyer, she was able to make design decisions—including paint colors—throughout the house before the project even began.

Disaster Grant Gets Northern Neck Firefighters Breathing Easier

Danger may be part of the job description for firefighters, but one critical piece of protective gear can significantly lower health risks for those who put themselves in harm’s way to protect lives and property in rural Virginia. 

“We consider every environment to be hazardous until the threat is contained,” says Chief Todd Padgett of the Cople District Volunteer Fire Department (VFD). “Air packs aren’t just used for house or structure fires. We wear them for hazmat incidents and outdoors on farms to safely operate in these areas.

River Town Raises Bar for Emergency Response

If you think larger, more well-funded communities have cornered the market on public safety innovations, think again. The St. Paul Volunteer Fire Department has built a robust organization with the vision and resources to go well beyond the town’s 1.4 square mile land area. 

The certified first response agency covers Wise and Russell counties and supports double dispatch of firefighters or police with Emergency Medical Services (EMS) for calls in Sandy Ridge, Coeburn, Copper Creek, Cleveland, Dante and Castlewood.

Community outreach leads to enhanced safety, reliability for rural police department

Outreach events offer a unique opportunity for community leaders and Rural Development staff to come together, identify community needs, and match potential projects with Rural Development funding.

During one such visit between the Wagner mayor, city finance officer, and the Rural Development team in 2023, the Wagner Police Department shared a challenge it faced with the upkeep of their police cars.
