Lorraine Polak

State Director for South Dakota

Lorraine Polak serves as the State Director for USDA Rural Development in South Dakota, bringing more than 30 years of extensive experience in economic development and housing within the state. Lorraine grew up on a dairy farm near O’Neill, Nebraska. She earned her bachelor’s degree in accounting and finance from Chadron State College, which set her on a path of impactful service.

Lorraine began her career at the Governor’s Office of Economic Development in Pierre and later dedicated more than 25 years to South Dakota Housing, where she made significant contributions to improving housing options across the state. Lorraine most recently served on the staff of U.S. Senator Mike Rounds, advocating for the rights of rural citizens.

Director Polak is dedicated to partnering with local leaders, small businesses, nonprofits, and families. She focuses on helping communities achieve their goals through the successful utilization of the various programs and services offered by USDA Rural Development. She is committed to ensuring that federal resources entrusted by Congress are effectively utilized to benefit South Dakota's communities.

Lorraine and her husband, Mike, are proud parents of three grown children.
