The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is providing funds for critical water infrastructure upgrades in Maxatawny Township in Berks County. This funding comes from the Water and Waste Disposal Loan and Grant Program in USDA’s Rural Development (RD) agency.

“USDA Rural Development’s Water and Environmental loan and grant programs are examples of USDA’s commitment to the future of rural communities,” said Trudy S. Moore, Acting Pennsylvania State Director.

Rural Development funds will be used to replace approximately 10,000 linear feet of water main servicing 151 equivalent dwelling units in the village of Bowers, located in Maxatawny Township. These lines are in excess of 50 years old and are in need of replacement due to high unaccountable water loss. The upgraded system will also provide for increased access to fire flow by the addition of fire hydrants throughout the system.

USDA Rural Development provides loans and grants to help expand economic opportunities and create jobs in rural areas. Programs improve water and electric infrastructure; start or expand businesses; help residents buy homes; fund community facilities such as schools, public safety and health care facilities; and bring high-speed Internet access to rural areas.
