Project Preserves the Heritage of a Rural South Dakota Community

Yankton, S.D., Oct. 27, 2020 –USDA Rural Development State Director Julie Gross visited the Yankton County Historical Society, Inc. to congratulate them on their $500,000 USDA Rural Development Community Facilities Direct loan to renovate the historic 1909 Mead Building and present them with a certificate.

“This project will help fulfill the mission of the Yankton County Historical Society, through the Dakota Territorial Museum, which exists to preserve, protect, interpret, and educate the public about the heritage and development of the city and county of Yankton, and the Dakota Territory,” said USDA Rural Development South Dakota State Director Julie Gross. “Under the leadership of President Trump and Agriculture Secretary Perdue, USDA has been working tirelessly to be a strong partner to rural South Dakota in building stronger and healthier communities, because we know when rural America thrives, all of America thrives.”

Background: Yankton County Historical Society (YCHS), Inc., based in Yankton, received a $500,000 loan to renovate the historic 1909 Mead Building back in January of 2018. A portion of the project included the installation of an elevator that makes all floors of the facility accessible to everyone. The enhancements provide a first-class regional museum and cultural center that is an enormous asset to the community.
